Two Indianapolis Police Officers Shot on West Side, Suspect in Custody

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Two Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers are recovering after being shot Friday afternoon during an incident on the city’s west side, authorities said.

The officers were wounded after IMPD responded to a reported shooting in the 300 block of North Fleming Street near West Vermont Street, an area across from Thatcher Golf Course and just south of Speedway.

Police were called to the area at approximately 2:30 p.m. following reports of gunfire.

According to IMPD, two officers sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Both officers were reported to be in stable condition.

The suspect involved in the shooting was taken into custody, police said.

Residents Told to Shelter in Place – Indianapolis Shooting/ Active Shooter

The incident prompted a significant police response as officers searched the area and worked to secure the scene.

At approximately 3:01 p.m., IMPD issued an urgent warning to people in the surrounding area, instructing residents to shelter in place and avoid the area while officers dealt with what police described as an active situation involving gunfire.

The warning remained in effect while officers worked to locate and apprehend the suspect.

Once the suspect was taken into custody, police said they no longer believed there was a threat to public safety in the area.

Authorities have not immediately released the identities of the wounded officers or detailed the extent of their injuries.

Investigators are now working to determine what led to the shooting and reconstruct the sequence of events that resulted in the officers being wounded.
